Is anonymous blogging the way to go?
I got an email recently from one of my readers. Her question was “do you reveal your identity or is anonymous blogging the way to go?”
I thought maybe others too have this question in their mind. So why not write a blog post rather than just reply by email. When someone else raise a similar question in future, I can direct them to my blog post to save some time.
So this is my thoughts on the question:
The choice to go anonymous or reveal your identity on your blog is entirely personal.
But before you make your decision, just look at some of the pros and cons.
When you put your face on your blog, your readers will feel that they are reading a blog post by a real person. This will make it easier to build the trust between you and your audience.
If your writing is truly outstanding, you could become an authority blogger and earn a lot of fan following. This will also make your life a lot easier to get followers if you come up with another blog in future.
This is if you reveal who you are on your blog!
If you can put your face or reveal your identity on your blog without any harm to you, then, by all means, do so.
So what could possibly harm you if you reveal your identity?
If you have a respectable job, and if your passion is something that could damage your image, then put your face on your blog is something that you don’t want to do.
If your niche is something that you are passionate about but you feel many may have a different opinion, then you could invite unpleasant situations if your identity is revealed.
Another possibility is that if you are working in an office and the management does not agree with your views on your blog you could invite trouble.
By putting your face on your blog, you are immediately recognized. When you are out in public events or parties or social gatherings this can be a good thing if you are among people who like what you stand for. But it could also cause you problems if you are with someone who despises what you write.
One thing you as a blogger to keep in mind is that there could alway be mixed opinion about what you stand for. People could accept it or could not agree with it.
Most often I have noticed that the people who are in favor of revealing their identity always strongly come against blogging anonymously. They feel that if you have the knowledge to share, then you should share it boldly.
This sounds great. But think of the other side too. By revealing your identity there is a chance that you could be dragged unnecessarily into heated discussions. Though I don’t think that this could happen too often, there is always a chance.
Reveal or not reveal your identity is truly a personal choice.
Both are acceptable.
Give it some thought. Use your best judgment when you make your decision. Consider the fact that when your blog suddenly picks up popularity and your audience increase, do you want everyone to know wherever you go?
